Cancer’s protective shield: Blocking a signaling pathway could make small cell lung tumors visible to T cells

An international research team led by Dr. Lucia Torres Fernández from the working groups of Professor Dr. Julie George and Professor Dr. Roman Thomas at the University of Cologne has identified a critical dependency in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) that can be exploited therapeutically.

The study, published in the journal Molecular Cancer, demonstrates for the first time that SCLC tumor cells rely on the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway to cope with their extremely high mutation burden.

This mechanism enables tumor cells to break down harmful mutated products, thereby ensuring their survival; at the same time, however, it makes them vulnerable to new therapeutic approaches.
