Meet the hemifusome – a new structure discovered inside human cells -a previously unknown structure hiding inside human cells.

This mysterious organelle may play a vital role in how our cells recycle and process material, with major implications for disease research

Scientists uncovered a previously unknown structure hiding inside human cells in Organelle called the hemifusome discovered using cryogenic electron tomography which freezes tissue and reveals 3 dimensional structures with electron beams. The hemifusome sits between two vesicles and acts like a microscopic recycling center. It sorts, reroutes, and processes cellular materials playing a critical role in maintaining cell balance. “This is like discovering a new recycling center inside the cell”, says Seham Ibrahim of the University of Virginia.

If the hemifusome system fails, it could trigger cellular dysfunction linked to widespread disease. Researchers also observed that these structures behave unlike anything previously seen in known transport pathways especially when tested with gold nanoparticles.

This suggests they operate by new biological rules while their full role remains under investigation this discovery could change how we understand and treat genetic and degenerative diseases
