New nanotherapy eases bone metastasis pain by disrupting tumor-nerve crosstalk

A new nano-sized drug carrier that finds bone tumors and releases treatment exactly where it's needed is here to improve the precision and comfort of cancer therapy.

The spread of cancer from other areas to the bone, also known as bone metastasis, is one of the most lethal and painful aspects of cancer progression. More than 70% of patients with advanced stage prostate and breast cancers suffer from bone metastasis, which often tends to decrease the chance of survival.

Since bone is rich in nerves and blood vessels, it creates a perfect environment for the cancer cells to settle, spread, and interact closely with cells in and around bones. Bone metastasis hijacks the body’s own resources and develops disease-supporting structures that ultimately damage bone health.
