Special aspherical glasses slow down childhood myopia progression, two-year trial finds

The number of people who need prescription glasses to correct their vision is increasing each year as nearsightedness, or myopia, becomes more common worldwide. Current projections suggest cases could reach 50% by 2050, affecting nearly 5 billion people.

Myopia typically begins in childhood, which is why students often complain that they can’t see the whiteboard or a screen clearly. Now, a recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology has tested whether special lenses could slow the progression of pediatric nearsightedness.

Researchers conducted a two-year randomized clinical trial in which children ages 6 to 12 across the U.S. with myopia were given a highly aspherical lenslet (HAL), which combines two functions in one design: a single-vision zone that corrects refractive error and a myopia-control zone made up of 11 contiguous HAL rings.
